Christmas Party Photos of Pug at Pugalug’s Pug Claus

This weekend was Pugalug Pug Rescues’s annual Christmas party, Pug Claus, held at Purina PawsWay Toronto. It was a great event for pugs and pug lovers to gather, take photos with Santa and celebrate the holidays with their families and friends. We  saw our pal Fishstick, the star of the Backseat Barkers series looking very dapper in his Christmas Bowtie.

Such a fun way to raise funds for pugs in need. The raffle prizes were fantastic this year. They had 3 beautiful big gift baskets, a one night stay at the Westin Harbour Castle for and gift certificates too! Sadly, I did not win.

Kilo came along and sat with my husband enjoying cuddles and treats.

The event had awesome gifts to buy like Peachy Keen harnesses, bandanas and bow ties  our friend Igor’s calendars, and new PugALug t-shirts- all available online.

It was tons of fun meeting new pug lovers and of course playing with some many adorable pugs.

Adorable Photos of Pugs Having Fun at The Toronto Pug Grumble

Sunday was pretty nice weather, so  Kilo the Pug headed off to Trinity Bellwoods Park “Dog Bowl” for the monthly Toronto Pug Grumble for the first time (we popped by the Halloween event but it was at a store nearby). The event is hosted by handsome Instagram Celebrity Pug @HelmutthePug and his Mom. We were lucky enough to see them twice this week as Helmut was a model at the Strutt With Your Mutt Event at Purina PawsWay.

Kilo is a rescue and was quite anxious and shy at first, as he always is outside the house – we believe a bigger dog must have attacked him in a dog park before we got him and he just was not socialized. However, the pugs were all his size and not threatening so he handled the occasional butt sniff well and hung out on the perimeter with my husband. He did not react at anyone or anything and remained happy enough to eat the occasional treat and have a few cuddles with me.

We only stayed for 15 minutes but it was so fun as pugs are just too cute and sociable.  I am hoping that these little safe outings will gradually give Kilo a more positive feeling and build his confidence. He loves attention and playing with me so I hope some day he finds some new dogs friends he can relax with.

We saw our pal Helmut the Pug and many more pugs at Novembers Toronto Pug Grumble, see more photos.

We’ll see you at the December event! Details HERE.

9 Healthy Treats To Feed To Your Pug

9 nine Good healthy snacks to feed your pug dog

9 Healthy Snacks You Can Share With Your Pug

We love our pugs and can’t resist those big round eyes when our furry friends are hungry between mealtimes. But just like people, small dogs like pugs need to stick with healthy options to avoid gaining too much weight.

It is estimated that up to 50% of dogs are overweight. Pugs are at an extra risk for weight gain thanks to their short legs and snouts, making exercise tougher and less appealing. Too much extra fat can lead to a shortened lifespan and can even worsen your pug’s breathing troubles. It can also put stress on their little legs, backs and hearts.

TH Kilo bow tieThe best way to avoid weight gain in your pug is to go for regular walks and to avoid overfeeding. But if you have the following snacks on hand, you can train and treat your pets without risking their health.

9 Fruits & Vegetables For Your Pet To Snack On

(always check with your vet before trying as these lists are based on our experience)

  1. Carrots
  2. Apples
  3. Zucchini
  4. Green bell peppers
  5. Cauliflower
  6. Broccoli
  7. Berries like blueberries
  8. Watermelon
  9. Peaches

Peanuts are also OK but fattening and watch for choking as with all raw vegetables, fruits and nuts.

Some snacks like carrots are more appetizing when slightly softened/cooked and chopped or with the skin broken so dogs can digest better and I only give Kilo little pieces at a time he has to chase or find.

One thing to keep in mind is that not all fruits and veg are created equal! Several of the foods that are toxic to dogs are considered healthy to people.

Fruits and Vegetables You Should Not Feed Your Pug

  1. Avocado
  2. Citrus
  3. Grapes and raisins
  4. Onions, garlic, and chives
  5. Cherry pits (the flesh is fine) and peach cores
  6. Currants
  7. Apple seeds (the flesh is fine)
  8. Certain nuts.

These foods are part of a long list of people food that dogs should avoid.

Of course, on special occasions you might want to give your pug something a little special. It’s fine to periodically give your friend treats like peanut butter and frozen yogurt, and even special baked goods that make snack time fun!

How to keep your Pug happy and healthy indoors?

Top 10 Fun Indoor Dog Games to Play with Your Pug

With the cooler weather and rain in Fall, Kilo the Pug and I tend to spend less time outside.  I’m always looking for new ways to keep him mentally and physically active. He sleeps and cuddles a lot but needs to play, train and zoom every 2 hours for at least 5 to 10 minutes. Plus I like him to work for kibble, so we play games throughout the day.

Here’s our list of fun games to play with your pug to keep them entertained indoors. Comment below to add your games to the list.

10 Dog Games To Play Indoors

Trick Training

Use your time inside to teach your pug a new trick or obedience and focus. Make sure to keep sessions short and fun with lots of positive reinforcement such as treats or cuddles.

Make trick training fun by incorporating it into a new game to play with you pug. Try:

  • Red Light Green Light – works on “stay” and “come” commands

Dancing

Dancing with your pug or Canine Freestyle can be a really cool way to bond and get fit with your dog. Kilo has some amazing spins and jumps.

Hide and Seek or Go Find/Fetch

You can either hide yourself, a family member, a treat or your pug’s favourite toy.  This is a fun game for your pug that plays on their natural instinct to track, retrieve, herd and hunt -plus they love it when they find you. It’s like a treasure hunt for your pug.

Puzzles and Play Mat

Kilo loves his BUSTER ActivityMat By Kruuse  that comes with 3 levels of difficulty to keep your pug challenged.  It’s customizable to different sized dogs, portable and easy to take on the go since everything fits neatly in the handy bag provided. It comes with a handy guide for how to set up the various tasks to try. More complementary activities can also be bought. See The Full Review HERE.

The BUSTER ActivityMat starter set includes the mat, a storage bag and three different tasks. Examples of tasks include envelopes with Velcro closers and pockets that are connected in different ways via ties or wooden sticks, which must be removed in order for the dog to get to the enclosed treats. Pet owners should always be present with their pet when playing with the mat.
Kilo also loves his various food puzzles and I love challenging him so he does not eat too fast and exercises his brain while eating.

Treat Balls

Treat balls are a great way to keep your pug entertained and mentally stimulated as they work for their treats.

Kongs are also great for stuffing.Kilo Subzero kibble and Kong

Agility and Obstacle Courses

Attend agility classes at local dog facilities like PawsWay Toronto, or try setting up your very own agility course in your house for your pug. Just make sure it’s safe. Be creative and make a simple obstacle course inside your home with pillows, towels or old blankets. Make sure to clear enough space so your pug can run freely without hurting himself or damaging valuables.

Doga (+ unroll the mat)

Doga or doggy yoga or yoga with your dog could be a fun way for both you and your pug to relax and have fun bonding together. Kilo just jumps on me but we still have fun stretching.

I taught Kilo how to roll out his yoga mat by hiding kibble pieces rolled into it. He finds it a very rewarding game. Trouble is he now unrolls any mat he sees in search of snacks so my daughter has to remember to put hers away.

Tug

This dog game is favoured by many working and sporting dogs. But pugs love it too! For some, it is even more motivating than treats and can burn some good energy off quickly.

Kilo really loves playing Tug-of-war so we play a few times a day. Make sure you have a toy  that is soft and comfortable for your pug to hold in its mouth. Kilo does not like rope and has small teeth so we generally just use his plush toys. Playing tug with your pug can be a great way to work get in some basic training like the “Drop It” or “Give” commands. Kilo guards resources so we practice dropping and trading the toy with me for treats.

For some extra training on your pug’s self-control, try adding in throwing in a “Sit” and “Stay” before letting your dog have the toy to play with.

Soccer with plastic water bottles

Make recycling in your house super fun. Kilo the Pug loves to play with empty plastic water bottles or containers. I suggest using sofas at each end of the house or towels as goals and make it a soccer game.  Kilo has an absolute blast chasing and pushing and running with the bottle. He loves the noise it makes, biting on the crunchy plastic and the way it moves.

Indoor Swim For Pugs

If you have access to an indoor pool – playing Dog Games in a pool and swimming can also be fun for pugs. If you don’t, pugs can fit in most household bathtubs.  Just make sure the water is at a comfortable warm temperature and supervise carefully. Swimming can be a gentle and safe way for your pug to exercise since it has many health benefits for pugs.  It can also be a great option for older pugs as it’s .

Kilo the Pug is not a fan of getting wet, swimming or strangers, so this game is not a good fit for us. However, I took our senior dog Isabelle a few times in her last year and she LOVED it.

It’s A PUG PARTY!

Pugalug Pug Recuse‘s Annual Pugoween Halloween party at Purina Pawsway in Toronto was amazing! Thanks to all of the wonderful volunteers, staff and attendees that made this year so great.  A Grumble of Party Pugs came dressed in their Halloween costumes to help support the Pug Rescue, socialize with friends and of course, show off their costumes. It was non-stop action with little pugs running everywhere.

Kilo as Darth Vader

My husband came and sat with Kilo in a quiet corner up on a bench. He was actually pretty happy watching the fun from a safe distance. He wore his Darth Vader costume for about five minutes but I didn’t want to stress him and he is happier naked in just a harness.
